Climate Change Education:
Educate Students

Teachers and professors are encouraged to educate students of all ages about the health effects of global warming. The following websites provide helpful resources for incorporating information about global climate change into school curricula. Additional resources are available at the United States Global Change Research Program.

  • EPA Climate Change Kids website
    A comprehensive and well-organized introduction to climate, climate change and global warming. Includes games and links to other resources.
  • Youth Creating a New Climate for Action
    EPA is launching a climate change and children’s health education campaign to educate young people about climate change and its effects on children’s health. The campaign encourages our nation’s youth to take actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
  • EPA Environmental Kids Club
    EPA's website for kids includes games, pictures, stories and other fun things. There are sections for teachers, middle and high school students, and younger kids.
  • Climate Literacy: The Essential Principles of Climate Sciences (pdf)
    This guide is a product of a three day workshop sponsored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration that included governmental and non-governmental scientific organizations. The guide offers a climate-oriented approach to teaching science standards.
  • Checklist for Kids (pdf)
    Environmental Defense provides a checklist of things kids can do to get involved in climate change efforts.
  • Climate Classroom – What’s up with global warming?
    The National Wildlife Federation developed a slideshow and accompanying guide in accordance with the North American Association for Environmental Education’s Guidelines for Environmental Education and the National Science Education Standards on climate cahnge. They are intended for students in Grades 5 through 12, and showcase the most common questions from this age group on the topic of global warming.
  • Green Schools Program
    The Alliance to Save Energy provides hands-on, multidisciplinary lesson plans in the area of energy at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.

Higher Education:

  • Harvard Medical School and School of Public Health offers a course titled "Human Health and Global Environmental Change", which is open to the public. All course materials, including lecture videos, reading references, and presentations are available, free of charge. Additional resources for promoting a sustainable campus are available through the Harvard Green Campus Initiative.
  • AASHE, the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education, is a member organization of colleges and universities in the U.S. and Canada working to create a sustainable future. AASHE offers a resource center with specialized online resources and directories, professional development, including workshops and trainings, free weekly e-bulletin with top campus sustainability news stories, and interest groups and topical discussion lists.
  • Ecohealth is a website which was developed as a tool for students and teachers and focuses on the environment and human health. The interactive website is a result of graduate courses from the University of Wisconsin and Johns Hopkins University. Information is presented in a visually-vibrant and lively format. The site features photos, diagrams, maps and video clips, standards-based lesson plans, a news page and a glossary with many terms not yet found in household dictionaries.
